Located at the crossroads of the three continents, Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Situated 40 miles south of Turkey at its nearest coastal point it is smaller than Sciily and Sardinia and larger than Corsica and Crete. North Cyprus comprises a total area of 1357 square miles, with over half the islands 240 miles of coastline.
Historic Cyprus
Situated in a strategic crossroads between East and West, Cyprus has a rich and varied history. Over the centuries the island has been settled by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans, British and Turks. The beautiful Venetian harbour of Girne/Kyrenia is a UNESCO world heritage site and is considered to be the most beautiful harbour in the Mediterranean.

The gothic mountains of the Bes¸parmak range are crowned by the 3 fairy-tale crusader castles of St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara. There are intriguing Bronze Age burial sites and temple ruins. The beautiful Bronze Age gold crown in the Güzelyurt Museum is one of the finest examples of its type. The ancient and well preserved coastal city of Salamis with its amphitheatre and columned courtyard.

The Venetian walled city of Famagusta, with its many ruined churches including the twin churches of the Knights Templar’s and Knights Hospitaller's. The Lusignan Cathedral of St. Nikolaos inspired by the Cathedral of Reims, was converted to Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque by the Ottomans is a truly fascinating place to visit. The Karpaz peninsula famous for its outstanding natural beauty and beaches is scattered with places of historical interest, deserted Byzantine chapels, the working monastery of Apostolos Andreas and the well preserved mosaics of the Basilica of Agia Triada, (Sipahi).

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is the last divided city in the world.  The ‘blue walk’ is highly recommended and will take you through the old city.
